Personal Statement:
Today’s educators must have an assortment of important qualities to be effective. Of course, knowledge regarding current educational issues and best practices in their area of specialization is necessary. However, the willingness to be a life-long learner is also especially important. It is crucial that educators not only stay up-to-date regarding new educational trends and techniques but also remain open to learning from other experienced educators who may provide important insight into an issue or situation. Effective communication skills are another important trait that effective educational leaders must possess. After all, while knowledge is important, it is the ability to successfully share this knowledge with others and work collaboratively with students, colleagues, and community members that is most important.
While I believe that mastery of content knowledge is critical for the future success of my college students, I believe that teaching facts and definitions are not enough to ensure a successful future for today’s students. Students need to learn critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to be successful in society today. After all, the most rewarding careers now require employees to problem solve, think analytically, comprehend complex problems and situations, and communicate well. Utilizing current technologies in and out of the classroom is also imperative. Therefore, providing students with the opportunity to complete assignments that enable them to learn content in conjunction with these other important skills need to drive teaching and learning.
Although I strive to impart content knowledge, problem solving skills, and critical thinking skills in my students, I also try to teach them to think independently and believe in themselves. Luckily, I was fortunate enough to have some inspiring and knowledgeable teachers, along with a loving and supportive family who never told me that I did not have the ability to achieve. I can only hope that some of this sentiment is conveyed to the students who I teach every day so that they can bring the same “personal ethics” into their work and personal lives. As best I can, I try to teach my students respect for themselves and others by myself trying to treat them with respect and courtesy. I also feel that it is good preparation for a professional work environment.
During my sixth year as full time faculty at Nichols College, I tried to keep these beliefs in mind when planning and executing my lessons. It is my hope that the content in this portfolio is a good reflection of the philosophy expressed above!
